Lorum Ipsum etc. etc.
Put together a mix with only songs from 2023. In the process, discovered Aesop Rock's album ITS. ALong with being prolific af, his lyricism is insane. Here's some dense bars from his song Kyanite Toothpick:
Thief market buzzing by what use to be McDonald's
The currency is crystal and deconstructed Elantras
Anonymous warning shots are the modern attention shoppers
A stop in defense of honor's a belly flop in piranhas
Money, get to the chopper, money, on your way adopt a puppy
I'm on that proper dummy, it's getting Tonka Truck-y
Yup yup, you on that curfew
I'm on that late night, you on that church pew
I'm on that Bauhaus, I'm on that Brutalist
I'm on that OG, you on that new to this
I'm on that matador, I'm on that bull fight
You on that bullshit, I'm on that dirtbike
Can't believe he rhymed pupps and Tonka Truck-y lol.
Also listened to a lot of live music this month: First the Cathedral Park Jazz Fest and then an Of Montreal show (very nostalgic for me). And of course visiting tuesday night jazz at my fave local bar. Yayyyy live music
Been listening to this on repeat. What else is there to say. I wish that I could fall. Can't believe it's such an effective love song and depression song.
Lorum Ipsum etc. etc.
Crazy but even while I put together two radio shows this month, nothing was incredibly inspiring. Oh wait, no I watched this fascinating video on Chinese pop music and why there's linguistic predisposition to ballads. That led me to Jay Chou and Khalil Fong, the latter who recently died ;_;. I even picked up Journey To The West by Khalil, which is great. It sounds like a lost album by Justin Timerlake (in Chinese, obvi). Just give "Ring Finger" a listen and tell me they're not similar.
Superbly funky. I heard websites on the radio and knew it was them, and that I needed to listen to the whole album.
Swoon by Prefab Sprout
Lots of really cool composition choices and chords. A little like XTC or more recently...um, Phoenix.
Dance music through-and-through. Put it on in the background and boogie.
This one took a while to warm up to, but Jens is my fave for a reason. A heartfelt album about losing love, as he excels at producing.
An earworm from eggtan. Thank you for the goofy animations of teto looking a fool.
